How to list education on a resume (with 8 examples)
Where education goes, what to include, and how to handle degrees in progress or from abroad.
Education is the most templated section of a resume, but small mistakes here quietly hurt credibility. Here's the clean version.
Where it goes
Below Experience once you have 2+ years working. Above Experience only if you're a current student or new grad with less than a year in industry.
The required fields
- Degree and major: 'B.S. in Computer Science'.
- School name and location.
- Graduation year (or 'Expected 2026').
- Optional: GPA if 3.5+, honors, relevant coursework, thesis, study abroad.
Degrees in progress
B.A. in Economics, Expected May 2026 — University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Fine to list.
Foreign degrees
Translate the degree to the closest local equivalent ('Diplom-Informatiker (equivalent to M.S. in Computer Science)'). Keep the original institution name.
When to drop GPA
Anything under 3.5 in the US, and always after 3+ years of professional experience. Nobody cares what your GPA was once you have real work to show.

Do I need to list high school?
Only if it's your highest completed education. Once you have any college — even in progress — drop high school.
Should I list online courses?
List certificates from recognized providers (Google, AWS, Coursera specializations). Skip one-off tutorials.
